Northern lights in the Netherlands
Aurora over the Netherlands is not a myth. Anyone who stepped outside on the nights of 10 May or 10 October 2024 saw the entire sky — as far south as Limburg — glow red and green during the strongest geomagnetic storms in twenty years. And with the Sun around its activity maximum, the odds remain above average for years to come.
But you need to know when to look, where to look, and which signals to watch. That is exactly what this guide covers — and it applies to any location around 53° latitude, from the UK to northern Germany.
What is the aurora, exactly?
The Sun constantly blows charged particles into space: the solar wind. During an eruption — a coronal mass ejection (CME) — billions of tonnes of plasma are added on top. When such a cloud slams into Earth's magnetic field, particles are funnelled along the field lines towards the poles, where they make oxygen and nitrogen atoms glow at 100–300 km altitude: green and red (oxygen), purple and blue (nitrogen).
The stronger the storm, the further south the "auroral oval" sags — down to the Netherlands and beyond.
When do you stand a chance?

The rule of thumb for ~53° north:
- Kp 5–6: photographically visible low on the northern horizon, especially from the northern coast;
- Kp 7: visible to the naked eye in the northern Netherlands;
- Kp 8–9: a potential spectacle across the whole country, high in the sky.
The right conditions
- Season: storms are statistically more effective around the equinoxes (March/April and September/October). Summer nights are too bright.
- Moon: the less moonlight, the better.
- Timing: most activity falls between 22:00 and 02:00 local time, though a strong storm can strike at any hour.
- Warning time: a CME takes one to three days to reach Earth — plenty of time to plan your night if you follow the alerts.
Where should you stand?
Three rules: dark, north-facing, unobstructed northern horizon. In the Netherlands, the best spots are:
- The Wadden Islands and the Wadden coast — the darkest skies in the country, with the North Sea as a perfectly empty northern horizon;
- The Lauwersmeer area (Groningen/Friesland) — an official Dark Sky Park, easy to reach;
- Northern beaches and sea dikes — anywhere the sea forms your northern horizon;
- Inland: open nature reserves such as the Dwingelderveld or the northern edge of the Veluwe.
Avoid looking north across cities and greenhouse complexes. Even during a strong storm, light pollution makes the difference between "faint glow" and "wow".
How to see (and photograph) more
- Give your eyes 20 minutes of dark adaptation — the same rule as in stargazing;
- Look north, low above the horizon; faint aurora resembles a greyish glow or "searchlight" beams;
- Use your camera as a detector: 5–15 second exposure, high ISO, wide aperture — the sensor sees colour long before your eyes do;
- A tripod (or a phone in night mode propped on a fence post) is enough for your first aurora photo.
Why these are the good years
The Sun follows a roughly eleven-year cycle. The current maximum (solar cycle 25) peaked around 2024–2025, and the aftermath lasts for years: the declining phase often delivers the fiercest storms, as coronal holes and residual activity keep driving powerful solar wind. The coming autumn and winter months are prime hunting season.
