Stargazing for beginners
You don't need a telescope, experience or a desert sky to start stargazing. From an average back garden, on a clear night, you can see planets, constellations, satellites and — with a little patience — shooting stars. This guide takes you from "which star is that?" to a serious hobby in four steps.
Step 1: learn the sky with the naked eye
The biggest beginner mistake is buying a telescope right away. If you don't know the sky, a telescope won't find it for you. Start by recognising:
- The Big Dipper, visible year-round from northern latitudes. Extend the two stars at the end of its bowl five times and you land on Polaris — true north, always.
- Orion, ruler of the winter sky, with the red supergiant Betelgeuse on his shoulder — the most famous supernova candidate in our sky.
- Planets don't twinkle; stars do. Venus and Jupiter are often the brightest "stars" you'll see.
- The ISS glides across the sky as a bright, silent star, west to east, several times a week.
A free star-chart app (such as Stellarium) makes identification effortless: point your phone at the sky and it labels everything. Switch on night mode (red screen) to protect your night vision.
Step 2: find the dark
Light pollution is the stargazer's enemy number one. The rules of thumb:
- Get at least 30–50 km away from major cities;
- Coasts, national parks and official Dark Sky Parks offer the best skies (in the Netherlands: the Wadden Islands and Lauwersmeer; every country has its own map — check a light-pollution atlas online);
- Choose nights around new moon: a full moon washes out the Milky Way completely.
Step 3: buy binoculars — not a telescope yet
The best first purchase for any stargazer is a pair of 10x50 binoculars (10× magnification, 50 mm lenses). They will show you:
- Craters and maria on the Moon, with dramatic shadows along the day-night line;
- Jupiter's four largest moons — the same ones Galileo saw in 1610;
- The Pleiades, the Andromeda galaxy and countless star clusters;
- Ten times more stars than the naked eye.
Good binoculars cost a fraction of a telescope, fit in a coat pocket, and stay useful forever. Only when you're still outside months later is a telescope the logical next step.
Step 4: your first telescope
Hooked? Choose a 150–200 mm Dobsonian. That design delivers by far the most light (and therefore view) per euro, is nearly indestructible and sets up in five minutes. Avoid the "600× magnification!" telescopes from toy shops: magnification means nothing, aperture means everything.

What can you see, and when?
- All year: the Moon, ISS passes, constellations, bright planets.
- August: the Perseids — the year's most reliable meteor shower, up to ~60 meteors per hour around 12–13 August.
- December: the Geminids, often even more active — dress warmly.
- Winter: Orion, Sirius and the brightest sky of the year, with darkness falling early.
- During solar storms: the aurora — visible even at low latitudes.
